Although the best method of becoming a great photographer is practice, I find that photography books can be a great tool in the learning process. I recently checked out a decent wedding photography book at the neighborhood library (which reminds me - I've got to return it...eek!), but it was published about 10 years ago. Even though some of the lighting and positioning basics were quite helpful, in digital photography terms the book is quite outdated.
Thank god for Amazon.
Typically my rule of thumb for buying online is, before making a purchase, to check whether or not the item I want received high user reviews across the board. When looking for a stellar book on wedding photography, I did just that and found a gem - Captured by the Light, an awesome piece of work by Cincinnati photographer David Ziser (also check out his extremely helpful blog).
I'd kill for the opportunity to shoot with him, but alas - I think I need a teeny-tiny bit more experience before I jump on that bandwagon (unless he *gasp* reads this post and thinks otherwise, but that's about a one in a million shot). So far I'm liking it - learning a lot about how to make the bride and company look absolutely fabulous, among other things.
