After stopping by my parents' house in Chicago (who are awesome and super generous, by the way - in fact, I owe tonight's dinner of fried rice to their willingness to give us their old rice cooker), we made our way to our old neck of the woods - Milwaukee.
Even though I've been living in the Oxford/Cincinnati area for well over a year now, I still miss Mil-town. In fact, I find myself having dreams about the city and the adventures I used to have. Perhaps one day I'll move back - but in the meantime I took these photos to hold me over through the homesickness that my subconscious doesn't want to shake.
The spot photographed holds special meeting for me. In front of this very British-looking phone booth, I kissed my now-husband for the very first time. Before you get too cheesy and sentimental, shortly after the kiss I turned around and discovered we were in front of a restaurant with staring patrons. Naturally I blushed, grabbed his hand and scurried away as fast as my two short legs could take me.
I love Milwaukee's River Walk. I used to stroll along it during my lunch breaks.
This was the park that my husband got hit on by a gay homeless man. Gotta love Milwaukee crazies!
Usingers: home to ridiculously good sausage. Seriously - try it sometime. Or have some shipped to you.
This next photo has a story attached to it. I guess I'll start at the beginning...
When we were walking down the River Walk, my hubby got an inexplicable craving for maple root beer (another must-try - instead of using sugar or high-fructose corn syrup as the base, they use maple syrup. I heart Wisconsin.), so we went way out of our way to Lakefront Brewery to satisfy it. As we were walking back, what looked like a large heavy leaf fell from the sky and landed with a dull thud right in front of us.
Turns out it was a bird that flew into a window at Laacke & Joys (an outdoor goods retailer right on the river). Since I'm a hardcore animal lover (seriously - I don't even like to kill bugs and used to volunteer at a humane society when I had free time) I ran inside to see if one of the store associates would help the bird out. Thankfully the good souls at Laacke and Joys didn't think I was completely nuts for trying to save a bird and came outside. After a few minutes of gentle nudging, we got the bird flying again. Yay for happy endings!
But in the meantime, I used the opportunity to photograph the poor creature. This was obviously taken before the great rescue.
